The benefit of Tai Chi

Tai Chi has been practiced in China for over 300 years, although it was originally started as a martial art, but it slowly developed into the slow, gentle form that we see now a day. From traditional Chinese medicine point of view, Tai Chi helps open up the meridian channels, cultivate Qi, build qi, and promote longevity.

From a medical science point of view, Tai Chi exercises improve proprioception, sensory neurons in the inner ear, and stretch receptors in muscles. That is why Tai chi is well known to improve balance and reaction time. There is a lot of study and research being done on Tai Chi and Fall prevention, which shows a positive result.

Tai Chi is a great exercise to improve strength, flexibility, and coordination in the upper and lower body. It is vital for aging people who need to remain alert and balanced.

Research shows that Tai Chi is an excellent form of exercise for people with chronic conditions. It is beneficial for patients with osteoarthritis of the knee and fibromyalgia. In 2013, a meta-analysis of seven trials found that a 12-week tai chi course could improve physical function in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee. However, the authors of this study recommended larger-scale trials to support these results (Yan et al., 2013)

Apart from improving muscle strength and flexibility, it can enhance self-esteem and improve a person’s psychological well-being. A study done in 2013 by Wang Feng found that participants experience reduced stress and depression symptoms (Wang et al., 2013), however, more research need to be done.

The exercises are simple to learn and become a part of one’s life. It can be done anywhere, at any time. As long as you know the proper technique, you can begin practicing this ancient art at any age. The benefits of this type of exercise are numerous. It can improve one’s balance, reduce tension, and improve the quality of life. Even older people who do not have much physical stamina or strength can benefit from Tai chi. Although there are some other benefits of Taichi, these are only the tip of the iceberg.

Although there are countless benefits from practicing Tai Chi, it’s not a substitute for professional medical care. It is a great way to keep debility at bay. If you’re interested in learning Tai chi, speak to a doctor before starting the practice.
